Only 6 children had enrolled the previous year, falling short of the minimum required student ratio. In the place with the highest number of wind turbines in all of Galicia, Muras (Lugo), 576 residents live, according to the 2025 INE (Spanish national statistics institute), with a record figure of 381 wind turbines. What would seem to be a source of income and energy does not, in reality, yield proportional benefits for the residents of this small municipality of 163 square kilometers compared to the profits of renewable energy companies. Years ago, the local council implemented a measure allowing municipality residents to receive a discount on their electricity bills.

José do Marqués, a humble shepherd from Puxedo (Lobios, Ourense), passed away a few months ago after a lifetime dedicated to the land. It was common to see him walking around the village with his flock of sheep. Like so many people, he believed in his farm animals and in a life deeply connected to the place where he was born. Despite witnessing the emptying of the area in recent years, he kept going out with his sheep almost until the end: “It’s sadder to have nothing”.
