In recent years, inland Galicia has become a kind of large-scale laboratory for studying longevity. The population of centenarians in Galicia has quadrupled since the start of the 21st century, and it keeps increasing year by year. The traditions that endure in the inland regions appear to be a recipe for a longer, healthier life: physical activity in the fields, self-sufficiency, strong community ties, and living at a slow pace are some of the key factors behind this phenomenon.
